Today was one of the best of the trip. We visited two high schools, one more middle class, the other struggling.
Vicky's Bed and Breakfast
Submitted by Morgan Keys on Sat, 2007-01-20 09:15.I am currently staying at the "Tube n' Axe" backpakers resort somewhere on the south eastern coast of South Africa. Last wednesday we spent a night in Township known as a Khayitlisha. A township, for those unfamiliar is semi-temporary housing built by poor blacks moving in toward the cities to find work. The townships are basically shanty-town, where each house is crudely (but creatively) fashioned out of corrugated metal sheets, and any other building materials available.
Day 4
Submitted by Morgan Keys on Sun, 2007-01-14 00:18.Hello! We've been in Cape Town for 4 days now and there are so many experiences to tell about! Today we visited Crist the King Revival Church in downtown Cape Town--quite an experience! The service was bilingual--the pastor spoke english but a translator was there for the mostly Congolese, french-speaking congregation. The pastor spoke feircly and passionately. And the music was wonderful, a great african rythm.
In a few hour we'll head off to see Robben Island where Nelson Mandela spent most of his 27 years.
Studying for finals and dreaming of study away....
Submitted by Morgan Keys on Sun, 2006-12-10 15:11.It's the Sunday before finals week and I'm sitting at my computer, bundled in sweat pants and slippers, and listening to George Winston's December--pretty, sleepy, piano music. I'm not terribly worried about my tests this week, but I'm a bit worried that I'm not more worried... It's all just one more hurdle before I get to leave the dreary, damp North West winter and fly to the other side of the world, where it's nice and warm. By searching the web for weather info, I see that Cape Town is experiencing some pleasant weather: highs in the upper 70s, lows near 60--and that sounds real nice right about now...
