One last time...
Submitted by Kelly King on Thu, 2007-01-25 15:10.Today is our last day in China. I can't believe that our journey is coming to an end. As I look back on our experience here I have learned to appreciate Chinese and Tibetan Culture. Before leaving I had little knowledge about what to expect here, except for thousands of years of history. I had found the language frustrating and couldn't even use chopsticks (I can now say that I have mastered the art and prefer them over a fork!). The few weeks that we have been here have opened my eyes to the struggle of keeping old traditions and trying to become modern.
Life in Chengdu
Submitted by Kelly King on Fri, 2007-01-19 05:04.Daily life here in Chengdu is fast paced. Pedestrians, taxis, cars and buses all rush to get from one destination to the next. From the early morning to around midnight, people are always seem to be on a mission. The only time that I have seen people completely relaxed was at the People's Park where the elderly come together for martial arts, sword fighting, yoga, dancing and singing. We were told that once you retire in China, it is hard for the elderly to go from a structured, hard working life to a slow paced, relaxing environment.
greetings from Chengdu, China
Submitted by Kelly King on Fri, 2007-01-12 14:38.My world view has changed significantly since I have been here. The theme of our course is the Arts of China. We have seen an artist paint with waterbased colors, calligraphy, a concert of ancient Chinese instruments, a Chinese opera, visited an art institute, wandered the halls of the Chengdu Art Museum, visited a thousand year old tomb to see the elaborate carvings and art work. We have been really busy here, but there is much to take in. The cultural history, pride and simplicity of the China made me realize that I take for granted my own.
Jterm Journey
Submitted by Kelly King on Sun, 2006-12-10 16:10.This week was our last group meeting before we depart for China in about 3.5 weeks! I am so excited for the new experience that awaits us. Growing up, I traveled all over Europe, but have never been to Asia. I am looking forward to the experience of Chinese culture and language, even if it will be a large cultural shock from the Westernized world I am used to.
I am not exactly sure of the values of our host culture in their commitment to educating for justice, health, sustainability, and peace. At the moment, I am not sure if they addressed differently than the United States.
