Pre-Trip Excitement
In my time as a communication and global studies major, I have been exposed to a plethora of academic readings that reiterate the imminent nature of conflict. As such, I am excited to explore the different institutions or communities that have promoted peace following apartheid in South Africa. It is quite encouraging on the whole-for international conflict resolution-that these organizations have been paramount in pursuing peace and social justice. Moreover, we as students of this globalized generation and university have the opportunity to share the South African’s histories and messages with our own discoveries as our exposure to new perspectives begins.
I am also anticipating the different pace of life and more relaxed sense of time, which many of my peers and professors have mentioned. Although at first glance our itinerary seems overwhelming, I will gladly invite the lack of fast-paced, on-the-go, looking out for number one: American lifestyle. Finally, I am eager to get to know everyone in our group. With the array of academic interests and international experience, I am certain we will all contribute and influence one another’s learning. Traveling with a group is a challenge and whether it is frustration with the slowpokes or the people who never stop, we will undoubtedly drive each other crazy. Yet, it will be an incredible opportunity to learn about myself and all of you (as travelers) as we journey through beautiful South Africa. I hope you all have a wonderful semester break. We have all earned it. I look forward to reconvening and getting to know many, if not all of you, on our 17-hour plane flight.
I hope you have all arrived
I hope you have all arrived safely and are ready for your adventure. I look foward to reading everyone's comments and viewing photos. This is will no doubt prove to be an experience of a lifetime. As I look outside to a snow covered winter wonderland with temperatures in the low 20's, I find it remarkable that you are halfway around the world immersed in a totally different climate and culture. Take copious notes and photos! I love you.

Prepared:
Kyle, I wish you the best on this excursion! Keep your blog posted and us peeps back in the Lute Dome will love hearing about some of the issues that you face and perspectives along with assumptions you come across. Also, I would love to hear and compare the feelings and emotions that S.Africa evokes as you learn about this state's history. Sustainable development!? Appropriate technology? Not in all places, eh? When you meet the people, always ask before you take a picture (I learned the hard way!) Take care and have a blast!
