Voices From Around The Globe
Study-away is not a travel opportunity. It is a vital part of PLU’s commitment to prepare students to understand how the world is changing and the complex reasons why. In four questions below, we have encouraged J-Term participants to share with us, in real time, their thoughts and impressions as they interact with other people and other cultures around the globe. Here they demonstrate an uncommon dedication to developing both a global perspective in their college studies and a deep understanding of the intercultural and intellectual richness of the world.

Submitted by Kristen Alston on Thu, 2007-02-01 12:46.My trip to New York is almost complete and it feels great to be able to conclude that I have accomplished the things I came to do. As an aspiring artist it was important for me to experience the art scene in New York as well as the reality of what it would be like to work and live in this environment. It was not only a class for me but somewhat of a personal challenge to really discover if I could do this, and if I could make it here. I had never been to the city and my main expectation was this idea of polarization.
2. People
What is daily life like for the people in your host culture? What joys and challenges do they say they experience? How is it different from life in the United States?
Visiting Local High Schools

Today was one of the best of the trip. We visited two high schools, one more middle class, the other struggling.

Do people in your host culture share PLU's stated commitment to educating for justice, health, sustainability and peace? How do they say these values addressed there? Are they addressed differently in the United States?
Exploring Peace Through Education
Submitted by Kyle Morean on Mon, 2007-01-29 10:32.Greetings one and all. We are settled into the Backpacker's Ritz our final hostel and accommodation for our trip. We in the northern suburb of Johannesburg called Hyde Park. Sounds a little British and snotty to me (and it's shows).

Further Insight on the Power of Storytelling

This blog, although a bit inaccessible and even bothersome at times, has been an incredible outlet to share the thoughts and experiences of SA with myself and all of you!
