The Peace Scholars Program was established in 2011 as an annual program designed to deepen students’ understanding of the central issues and theories regarding peacebuilding, conflict and war. Two students from each of the participating colleges and universities form the 12-member group of scholars.

The program has three components:
  • Study at a seven-week peace seminar in Norway.
  • Attendance at the Nobel Peace Prize Forum, which will next take place in September.
  • Contribution to peacebuilding efforts on PLU campus.
In Norway, students begin their study at the Nansen Center for Peace and Dialogue in Lillehammer.  There they engage in structured dialogue sessions with students from the Balkans/Caucasus regions and the Middle East.  Study at the Oslo International Summer School includes an interdisciplinary six-week undergraduate level course in peace studies. The course includes both classroom instruction and visits to prominent institutions dealing with peace and conflict. Upon return to the PLU campus, students work with the Peace Scholars coordinator to promote the program through presentations and recruitment meetings.

Travel, lodging and meals related to the Nobel Peace Prize Forum and the Peace Scholars summer study are paid for by PLU. Students are responsible for non-program costs, including personal travel and purchases.
