Program Description:
PLU Study Away Curricular Development Grant Guidelines
 
Purpose:
  • Provide funding assistance for prospective faculty leaders/directors to travel to place/country of interest to explore possibilities for establishing new programs and make appropriate contacts and arrangements
  • Enhance study away programming, particularly in underrepresented departments and majors
  • Enable more PLU students to participate in study away by expanding program options available
 
Timeline for Grant Cycle: (variations may be considered)
  • February 1 - Application opens
  • April 1 - Deadline for Study Away Curricular Development Grant application (Extended to April 10th for 20-21 applications)
  • April 30 - Recipients are notified (Extended to May 11th for 20-21 applications)
Fiscal Year (June 1 – May 31)
  • Travel to place/country of interest
  • Submit all receipts to Wang Center for Travel Expense Voucher preparation
  • Submit Post-Travel Reflection and follow-up with Wang Center staff to continue planning process for program development
Summer or J-Term 
  • Lead newly established program with students
   
Grants are not designed for:
     - Providing travel funding for research or any other faculty interests other than establishing a study away opportunity

Eligibility and Application Requirements
  • All full time tenured faculty, tenure-track faculty, and long-term visiting faculty members are eligible to apply. 
  • Special consideration will be given to first-time applicants.
  • The Grant will provide up to $2,500 for airfare and other travel expenses.
  • A limited number of Grants will be awarded. 
  • Budgets proposed in the Grant application will be reviewed and modified as necessary. 
  • Grant recipients will work with the Wang Center to prepare a Pre-Travel Authorization form prior to the travel start date.
  • Grant recipients must keep receipts of their travel costs and complete a Receipt Reconciliation form. These items must be submitted to the Wang Center for preparation of the Travel Expense Voucher within 20 days of the travel end date.   
  • Prior to submitting your Study Away Curricular Development Grant application, please discuss with the Wang Center if you are considering travel to any location(s) designated by the U.S. State Department with a level 3 or level 4 Travel Advisory
Study Away Curricular Development Grant Requirements
  • A description of the proposed activity that provides the rationale and goals for the program, and establishes a clear connection between academic programming and the cultural experiences (see Questionnaires for guidelines).
  • A detailed itinerary and timeline for proposed travel.
  • A budget of estimated expenses.         
    (NOTE: Any additional sources of funding should be specified)  
  • Recommendation from Department Chair and Dean, indicating their support.
